Celebrating International Men's Day

November 19th marks the celebration of International Men's Day, a date dedicated to highlighting the contributions of men to society, promoting gender equality, and fostering men's health and well-being.

This celebration, although less known than International Women's Day, has a significant and valuable purpose.

Origins of International Men's Day

International Men's Day was established in 1992 by Thomas Oaster, director of the Missouri Center for Men's Studies at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. However, its global recognition began in 1999, when it was first celebrated in Trinidad and Tobago. Since then, it has gained support in various countries and international organizations.

Objectives of International Men's Day

The main objectives of this celebration include:

•  Promoting positive male role models: Not just celebrities and public figures, but also everyday men who lead dignified and honorable lives.

•  Celebrating men's contributions: Recognizing their role in society, family, marriage, economy, and environmental care.

•  Fostering men's health: Emphasizing the importance of men's physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

•  Highlighting discrimination against men: Addressing social attitudes and expectations that negatively affect men.

•  Improving gender relations: Promoting gender equality and mutual understanding.

•  Creating a safer and better world: Where men can reach their full potential.

The Importance of Men's Health

One of the fundamental pillars of International Men's Day is the promotion of men's health. On average, men have a shorter life expectancy than women, partly due to factors such as exposure to occupational hazards and behaviors associated with masculine norms of risk-taking. Additionally, men are less likely to seek medical attention and talk about their health issues. This day aims to change that narrative, encouraging men to take care of their health and well-being.

Promoting Gender Equality

International Men's Day also focuses on improving gender relations and promoting equality. By recognizing and celebrating men's contributions, it seeks to create balance and foster a deeper understanding between genders. This benefits not only men but society as a whole.

Celebrating International Men's Day

International Men's Day is an opportunity to reflect on the role of men in our society and to promote their well-being and health. By celebrating this day, we can move towards a more equitable and understanding society, where everyone, regardless of gender, can thrive and reach their full potential.
